A gentle guide for new collectors
Starting an art collection doesn’t have to be intimidating – it can be one of the most rewarding, personal, and joyful journeys you take.
1. Begin with what moves you
Art collecting isn’t about trends or big names – its about connection. The best place to start is by exploring what emotionally draws you in. Whether it’s the energy of colour, the calm of minimalism, or the texture of an abstract piece that feels alive under light, trust your instinct.
Art isn’t chosen with the eyes alone – it’s felt first, and recognised second.
2. Exploring Emerging Artists
You don’t need to start with museum names. Some of the most exciting art today comes from independent and emerging artists – creatives who pour heart and meaning into every piece.
Supporting them not only helps grow your collection but connects you to their evolving story.
RJ Collective celebrates this philosophy – offering original works that combine craft, soul and accessibility.
3. Start Small, but Start
You don’t need a huge space or a large budget to begin. A single 12×16 inch canvas can completely transform a corner of your home. Smaller works are often more affordable, letting you experiment with colour palettes and moods before investing in larger statement pieces. Look for explorations works, these will often be smaller scale and therefore more affordable.
“Art must be an expression of love or it is nothing”
– Marc Chagall
4. Think Beyond Decor
Art is more than something that matches your sofa. It’s a mirror of your identity, your experiences, and your emotional rhythm. Choose pieces that speak to your story, not just your wall colour. Those are the works that will continue to inspire you for years to come.
5. Ask Questions and Learn
When you buy directly from artists, you gain access to the story behind the work. Don’t be afraid to ask about process, materials, or inspiration – most artists love sharing their craft. Knowing how and why a piece was made deepens its meaning and creates a stronger bond between you and your collection.

6. Understand Provenance & Authenticity
A truly valueable collection is built on trust and transparency. When buying original artwork, look for:
- Provenance documentation – a record of the artworks creation, including it’s title. medium and date.
- Certificates of authenticity – confirmation the work is genuine signed by the artist, sometimes combined with the provenance.
- Archival materials – professional-grade paints, varnishes, and supports ensure your piece lasts for generations.
At RJ Collective, every artwork includes a signed provenance card, your personal record of ownership and legacy.
7. Build Confidence Over Time
Your taste will evolve – that’s part of the joy. Some collectors keep journals about what they are drawn to; others photograph their gallery visits or follow favourite artists online. The key is patience. A thoughtful collection reflects the journey of both the artist and the collector.
8. Invest in Presentation
Framing, lighting, and placement elevate your artwork and protect it. Many of RJ Collective’s pieces are offered with professional float framing options, designed to compliment the piece’s tone and texture. A well-framed artwork feels intentional – a centrepiece worthy of admiration.

9. Make It Personal
Your collection doesn’t have to impress anyone but you. Choose what makes you pause, breathe and smile. That’s how you build a collection that feels alive – one artwork at a time.
The artist’s world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep.”
10. Discover Local Talent
Don’t underestimate the inspiration waiting right on your doorstep. Visit your local art galleries, open-studio events, and art markets to meet artists in person and see their work up close. The experience of standing before an original painting – seeing the texture, the movement, the light – is something no screen can replace.
Supporting local art not only strengthens your community but allows you to form genuine connections with the people creating it. You might even find the perfect piece – or the perfect artist – just a few streets away.
