Introduction

Each artwork begins as an idea – a spark of colour, a passing emotion, or a moment of quiet inspiration. This Studio Journal follows the creation of Blushing Ferns as it evolves through the studio, capturing the decisions, reflections and transformation that shape its story.

Blushing Ferns feels like grounding piece for me – it feels like walking through the woods early in the morning, when the air is still cool and damp, and everything smells alive. There’s that moment when the light filters through the trees and catches the ferns as they start to unfurl, and you can’t help but reach out and let your fingers trail across them. It’s calm, quiet. and a little bit magical.

The colours came straight from the feeling – soft sage greens, hints of rose gold, and those warm mossy tones that make you feel rooted and connected. It’s about that balance between growth and stillness, strength and softness. Like nature whispering, you’re part of this too.

This piece is also extra special, as it’s one of the works chosen for my upcoming first gallery exhibition – a milestone that feels both surreal and exciting. It’s a reminder that something so deeply personal can also find its place out in the world, waiting for someone else to connect with it in their own way.

21st October 2025 – Catch Up and Next Steps

This is the first log post that I have done on Blushing Ferns as I have been ensconced in the creative process and getting this website set up. So far in the process for this painting we have developed and tweaked and tested the palette, resulting in a beautiful little piece called The Unfurling, which is currently in our Studio Preview section of the shop. Once set in stone it was choosing the canvas, which I went with a natural linen canvas to get the natural linen texture before setting up the studio for the pour.

The pour for this one was grounding, watching the paints unfurl as it blew across the canvas, the greens swirling and pinks popping through the cells whilst rose gold sits beautifully subtle. My initial thoughts were to resin coat this painting, however, to make this gallery ready I decided to frame this in a canvas float frame.

Today was all about testing and documenting. I checked Blushing Ferns against it’s oak float frame, and it’s a perfect fit – the tones complement each other beautifully. Seeing it in the frame, even temporarily, really brought the piece to life. It feels grounded, natural and exactly as I imagined it when I first poured it.

I also took the pre-varnish photos while the light was good – capturing that soft interplay between the sage greens and the rose gold highlights. Next on the list is varnishing, followed by framing, hardware fitting, and preparing the provenance details. Each step makes it feel a little more real, a little closer to being ready for the gallery wall.
